Carpe Diem, Olympians!

Valedictory Address

Life is like a roller coaster. My classmates would always hear me say that every time they complain about something. Well, it really is. Life can be like a roller coaster. It is filled with so many exciting twists and turns. Sometimes you’re up, sometimes you’re down. We really don’t know what is yet to come. People scream, people shout. Others cry, others laugh. No matter how hard this ride seems to be, we just have to get through it all.

You don't have to be great to start; instead, you have to start to be great. This is the story of my life. Way back in Preschool days, I was such a timid girl but eventually I came out from my shell as I stepped in Grade School. Little by little, I strived even harder to excel in my educational aspirations. From Batch 2008’s 2nd Honors, I now stand proudly in front of you as Batch 2012’s 1st Honors.

First and foremost, we have so much to be grateful for to our God Almighty for showering bountiful blessings upon us. One of these is the honor to be a student of Enfant Cheri. In this institution, we have received exceptional education. As they say, school is our second home. Enfant Cheri has done truly well in molding us to become better individuals. We have learned to become Cheerful, Helpful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Industrious, Amiable and Nimble. Thanks to our dynamic administrators and teachers, we are now prepared to move on and ready to take whatever challenges come next in our lives. I’d like to personally thank all my teacher-advisers for the past 14 years: T. Rose, T. Nelly, T. Vivian, T. Flora, T. Jinky, T. Reggie, T. Junar, T. Joel, T. Faith, T. Lyzyl, T. Vildon and T. Jimuel. I am not what and who I am today if not because of you, my dear mentors. To T. Vildon, T. Rudiard, T. Von, T. Apple, T. Junar and most especially to T. Lorenzo, thank you so much for believing in me. You have played a big part in my life as my incredible coaches throughout the different competitions I’ve joined in the field of Journalism, Public Speaking, Science and Mathematics. I am truly blessed to have all of you around. Thank you so much!

"I am not what and who I am today if not because of you, my dear mentors. To T. Vildon, T. Rudiard, T. Von, T. Apple, T. Junar and most especially to T. Lorenzo, thank you so much for believing in me. You have played a big part in my life as my incredible coaches throughout the different competitions I’ve joined in the field of Journalism, Public Speaking, Science and Mathematics."

Amongst all our life’s treasures, our family is the most precious one. Within the past four years filled with glee and some sorrowful moments, it is good to know that we had our families by our side, supporting and guiding us along the way. We owe a lot especially to our beloved parents. We would not be here today without you, our dear parents. May we take this chance to express our sincerest gratitude for all the sacrifices you have made to give us the best of everything. Even with our littlest success, we hope that we are able to make you proud. For four years they have been giving us their most resounding applause every time we climb on stage. It is time to pay tribute. At this juncture, I would like to request all my fellow graduates to please stand, turn back and let’s give our beloved parents the loudest applause that we can give them.

Fourteen years. That’s how long I’ve been here in Enfant Cheri. I just can’t believe that it’s about to end. Some of us have practically grown up together in Enfant Cheri from Preschool up to our Senior Year. Memories are infinite, and so are the stories to tell. We then realize that we can be thankful for each other. The friendships that we have made here will last a lifetime and in the same way we have helped each other to survive those four years in High School. I do hope that we will continue to be there for each other in our future ventures.

As we leave the doorsills of our Alma matter, today's achievements may fade or even be forgotten. The applause may become a distant memory and your certificates and medals may gather dust on a shelf or in a drawer. Fellow graduates, this is only the beginning. Something even bigger awaits us. We now have to bear in mind that we should aim to finish college in any field we choose. This is not only to secure our future but most especially to make our parents proud and happy. We should not waste the opportunity that our parents are giving us in our educational endeavors. Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.

So fellow graduates, dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today. Life is the sum of all your choices. Carpe diem Olympians! Congratulations and God bless us all.

March: A Tale of Perseverance

I have several favorite months of the year. December is one of them because of Christmas, May because it's my birth month, January because it's New Year and March because of many reasons.

In the Philippines, think of March and think of garlands of flowers, togas, medals, ribbons, certificates, diplomas and celebrations because one school year has ended thus it's time to reap whatever a student has sown in the whole school year. Yes, I like March because it's time for recognition programs and graduation ceremonies.

Right Photos: Me as an emaciated high school lad
Left Photo: Graduation at the PNU-AC
When I was an elementary kid I always look forward to this time of year because it would mean that I will be getting a new shirt, a new shorts, and a new pair of slippers because I will be going up the stage to receive my ribbon for being an honor student. My parents don't give me presents during Christmas or during my birthdays. I don't ask them why because young as I was, I already understood then that gifts are only for the well-to-do families. I saw kids in the neighborhood having new toys and clothes during Christmas and how I envy them but I just can't dare ask something like them from my parents or I'll get nothing but spanks. Food on our table was the only concern during that time, nothing more , nothing less. That's why in my entire six elementary years, I was always excited when March is imminent because this was the only moment that Papa and Mama become extra generous . During closing ceremonies, they always make sure to have me look my best when I go up that stage for that one-minute fame of receiving that single memento that I did good in school that year - my ribbon.

My graduation in high school was a lot meaningful not only because I graduated with flying colors but more importantly because I went through a lot during those four years. Although I was the only one being sent to school by my parents, still they hardly can survive my daily needs. Farming was the only source of income and we lost all of our farms for reasons I don't know. On my second year, we need to go back to the place that we left behind to turn it into "kaingin". We needed to start afresh. I needed to move from a private school to a public school. It was hard. I had to walk to and from school everyday, more or less ten kilometers in distance, morning and afternoon, rain or shine,  most of the time all by myself. The most difficult parts in those times were those I was asked to join presentations in school or inter-school competitions wherein I have to figure out where to borrow some outfits and how to ask for an allowance from my parents. Believe me, they never had extra for my extra-curricular activities. But I was lucky that throughout those years, I had teachers in school (Esperanza National High School) who were never just teachers to me. They turned out to be parents, sisters, friends who did not only inspire me to continue but they also contributed a lot for my graduation.

"I needed to move from a private school to a public school. It was hard. I had to walk to and from school everyday, more or less ten kilometers in distance, morning and afternoon, rain or shine,  most of the time all by myself."

The most defining moment was of course, my college graduation in the Philippine Normal University. I never thought I would be able to reach that stage of my life after I stopped for two years. It was a long story but basically the reason is because of financial constraints. In those two years, I ventured as a free teen-age man in the huge metropolis of  Manila. I had several attempts to enroll in some universities but I failed so when my parents decided for me to go home and go to school, I never gave it a second thought although life in the city is full of vigor and excitement especially for a young man like me.

Just the same, life in PNU was never that easy as well. It was still like a roller coaster ride but what makes it different was my old folks were in full force behind me. They used to be so unwilling to send me to school. They got this ideals from my  grandparents that education can't render any food at our table. That's one of the reasons why I can't force them to give me everything that I need in school because  when I do, it was always easy for them to tell me to stop. But then again, they came to realize that I was better off finishing college and great that in those years I saw how they did their best to provide my regular weekly allowance. They both gave up smoking. They utilized all the vacant spaces around the house to plant vegetables to sell around the neighborhood. Both of them, hand in hand, had to endure all the heat just to make and sell local sweets during weekends. I am proud that this degree that I have now is a product of "bibingka at suman" and a product of the many generous benefactors and donors that I met along the way of which I am always and forever be indebted to.

Years after...
One of the many reasons why I consider myself lucky is because my graduation would have not been in time of March because I was an irregular student at PNU-AC if not with the wonderful people God has blessed me with. (I was admitted on the second semester of 2000 so I was supposed to be an Octoberian graduate.) But great again because in the university, I met instructors who became more than just mentors but family. It is really worth mentioning that my adviser back then who is now the PNU-Agusan's Executive Director - Dr. Adelyne M. Costelo-Abrea and the then University Registrar Prof. Emerita M. Gumapac had been very patient in arranging my schedules each of those semesters I was there just so to make my March graduation possible.

So there came March of 2004, after all the battles I went through, after all the sleepless nights and the many obstacles I had to face, I proudly marched going to the stage side by side with both Mama and Papa, who for the first time escorted me to the stage, something which he never did in my elementary and my high school recognition programs.

March is one of my favorite months of the year because it takes me back to where I started. It connects me to the people who have contributed of who I am today. While reminiscing all these, I am humbled all the more and I feel so much blessed for all that I have now. I may not have everything but I have enough...and I am happy... and truly grateful.

Jordan's Poetry

Living on the Edge
Jordan B. Bandojo

In the province where the
Emaciated stem lives,
I remember...
The cockerel's crow
That wakes me up at dawn:
No alarm, no busy sound.

The quacking of the ducks
givea me a special vigor,
Watching them bathe in the rain.
No hot or cold shower
Only a pail of water
Hauled from the well.

No telephone to ring
Only an echo bouncing off the mountain.
No A/C which cools
Only the blow of open air
No oven for heat
Only wood to gather.
No TV to watch
Only stars at night
No car to drive
Only carabao's sleigh to ride.

No buffet at a table meal
Only Father's sermon advocating us to avoid a morsel
No entertainment
No electronic laughter.

The joy in Mother's tear.

The Poet:

Jordan B. Bandojo is a high school classmate and a very good friend of mine until now. We both grow up in the countryside thus the inspiration of this poem. As a DOST scholar, he went to the University of San Carlos, Cebu and finished a degree in Bachelor of Science in Physics. Presently, he works as manager in one the top call center companies in the Philippines and in the midst of his busy schedule, he finds time to be a father to his kids and writes poetry, too.

Thank you my friend for sharing this beautiful poem here in Enzo's Point.

Lies and Illusions

Some people think that when they lie about their real status in life (I mean by telling people that "back where I am from I am this and that and I have all these and that...blah...blah...blah...) they gain more respect, that they gain more friends, that others will treat them as if they are untouchables or some kind of royals. The truth is all they gain out of this illusions are raised eyebrows and sarcastic "really eh?". So why on earth are you here? Why the need to endure a life far-away from your family  when in fact you are born with a silver spoon and a golden platter?
"We come to a foreign land for a common reason - we need to work because what we earn in the Philippines is not enough to sustain our growing needs and the needs of our growing family. It's a fact and let's be proud of that."
When I worked in a private school in the Philippines for six years, I got the chance to interact with really well-off and I mean really rich people. My students back then were those whose parents own gasoline stations, famous hotels and restaurants, department stores, and really big businesses in the city but there are two things that I admire about them - they were sincere and very down-to-earth. I believe my colleagues in school will agree with me if I say that those parents never gave us this feeling that we have to be intimidated by them because they were millionaires and we  were just plain teachers. My apologies for the comparison but I just can't help it because I have met several individuals who are seem to be blinded with the riches they just got hold. Boy, how they act as if they are the world's richest and talk as if nobody is above them.

Sure there's nothing wrong with opening up or sharing about your personal life to others but hey, do you really have to tell them that you are living a good life in our country and that you don't really need to do this OFW thing? Oh? Really? Come on...don't be silly! Are you actually trying to fool us or yourself?  We come to a foreign land for a common reason - we need to work because what we earn in the Philippines is not enough to sustain our growing needs and the needs of our growing family. It's a fact and let's be proud of that.

I admire people who don't deny their humble beginnings. I admired Shamcey Supsup even more when she said her number 1 inspiration is her mother who started out as very poor in Basilan province but eventually made it through because of hard work and perseverance (Click the link for Shamcey's Facebook Post). Now, that is something worthy of a crown.

Rumor Has It

It may have just started with a small talk about A that B shared to C which was overheard by D who asked E about how true was it. E whose curiosity was aroused then inquired from F about the whole thing until what was supposedly an insignificant issue was blown out of proportion until everybody in the Alphabet Village has his/her own version of it. When A heard of the talks about him and began to confront everyone, nobody dared admit to be the source. Then it came to the point that the peaceful town has turned into a battlefield of rumors, gossips and intrigues.

Gossip Defined:

Wikipedia defines gossip as idle talk or rumor about the personal or private affairs of others. Sometimes it starts when someone who thinks that sharing a bit of information about another person's personal life is totally harmless. Unfortunately some small issues turn into a full blown scandal when the concerned people begin to react accordingly.

Why Do People Gossip?

Maritza Manreza of factoidz wrote: "There are many reasons why people feel compelled to gossip, therefore, humiliating and putting others down. Sometimes people do it out of spite, just because they can. Other times, people gossip because they feel they will benefit from its end result, such as possible looking better in front of the boss in a working situation." Some people feel superior above others when they think they get hold of this valuable (at least for these gossip mongers) information and are just waiting to be triggered to drop the bomb. It's as if they have this power in them - the power of malicious information. Two of the most common reasons why people gossip are inferiority and jealousy. People start spreading rumors about a person because they feel insecure and jealous and when they think they have already painted an ugly picture out of this person, they feel they are better than him/her.

"Gossips cause the victims to feel bad and lose self-confidence about themselves. They enhance division and never will it promote camaraderie. Gossips destroy organization, friendships, and family relationships. They break trust and credibility."

Gossip: Good or Bad?

I'd like to quote factoids again: "All gossip is bad, even the casual gossip about not so important issues." More so, when people spread gossip with malice (which more often than not most people don't admit). Gossips cause the victims to feel bad and lose self-confidence about themselves. They enhance division and never will it promote camaraderie. Gossips destroy organization, friendships, and family relationships. They break trust and credibility.

How To Deal with Gossipers:

In his site 2knowmyself M.Farouk RadwanMSc wrote three effective suggestions in dealing these kind of people and I'd like to share the first two here.

  • Let him burn: This is one of my favorite strategies, if someone is gossiping about me because of jealousy I just keep sending him good news about me to keep him burning with his own fire.
  • Confront him: If the gossiper is causing damage to your reputation and if you don't expect him to stop soon then call him when you are calm. Tell him that you are aware of his doings and that only those who are scared to face one another directly gossip. Most people will apologize and remember your call the next time they decide to gossip about you.
If I may add:
  • Ignore him: Let the gossiper know that he isn't worthy of your time and efforts. If he does that to gain friends and followers, let him be. In the end, people will know the truth and his true colors will be revealed. Sometimes, only those whose with itchy tongues like him listen to his nasty rumors.
Why this Article?

Because I need to remind myself that talking about other people's lives will not do anything good to me. Because I need to remind myself that if I don't have anything good to say about other people, I better keep my mouth shut.

Dishonoring Filipino Image

It is disheartening to note that while many Filipinos abroad are trying to the best of their ability to build a good name and maintain a good image for years  amidst all the unjust treatment they have experienced in their workplaces, some destroy it in an instant.

Published in Bangkok Post on Thursday is a news item with this headline: Filipino jewel thieves caught. A team of six Filipinos was caught stealing jewelry worth 6.39 million baht from a store in Siam Paragon Shopping Mall in Bangkok. The suspects were entrapped after the shop owners called the authorities about the missing pieces of jewelry right after the group had left the store. The police found the stolen jewelry which include gold and diamond rings and diamond necklace in their room in Centre Point Hotel where the group checked in. Another suspect named Gervacio Cruz, 33, is still at large.

While it is true that the act of these seven shameless individuals does not necessarily reflect the whole of the Filipino society working here in Thailand however, this may directly affect the Pinoys who are already here and most especially those who are still coming to seek employment. Somehow, this will  paint a bad picture out of us considering that this is not the first time a "kababayan" of ours is involved in this kind of criminal act. On the 18th of January last year, a Filipina was caught of stealing a sport shirt in Pattaya.

While many Filipinos abroad are trying to the best of their ability to build a good name and maintain a good image for years  amidst all the unjust treatment they have experienced in their workplaces, some destroy it in an instant.

What has got into the minds of these people? Did they really think that they could do such a crime as easy as that in this country and could just run away from it as if nothing happened? They must have been professional thieves back home that they decided to travel abroad to practice their skill.  Some kind of leveling up eh?

In as much as we try not to be affected with this kind of negative publicity about us but how can we be not when we have been recipients of inappropriate comments and disgusting treatments from the locals  who have so much regard to themselves and to the whites and not to their brown-skinned Asian fellows like us. But of course, the discrimination that we experience here is another story.

Poverty should never be used to justify this act. Nobody will remain poor as long as we know how to work. I fervently hope that this will serve as a lesson to those who are still plotting some black schemes out there. These seven crooks are better off behind those bars. Whatever sanction they get from Thai government, they only deserve it. Maybe then inside the place where they are now they'll realize that,  no amount of money, gold or diamonds can ever cleanse a  tainted dignity.

The Model Wannabe in Me

Out of nowhere, a friend suddenly asked: " If you aren't a teacher, what are you?"

I was dumbfounded. It has been a long long time since I was asked this question. I am used to ask this to my students but having me to answer it, I didn't expect it's that hard. So I quipped, "maybe a pimp". Nah...not at all. Just kidding.

Seriously, when I was a kid I have always dreamed of becoming a teacher. But there was some point when it shifted to being a broadcaster or a TV personality but of course those were part of my childhood fantasies and even as a young kid I knew it then they will never come to reality. So, for eight years now, I have made a flourishing career out of teaching however just recently, I was amused with blogging so I added it in my career list. Teacher/Blogger it is. Yet again, there's another job that I would like to pursue while teaching and blogging, it's photography modelling. I just had my first modelling stint recently with Click Art Photography in Phitsanulok and here's how it goes. Hold your breath! :)...lol...

At the train station...
Colourful World...

Vintage...

Enzo's Art

At the rail road...
The ultimate pose!
The point is, I may not have that model material in me but it's the photographer's job to make me one. It's the photographers magic that will matter in the end and so far, I like the way Click Art Photography made that magic in me.

If I am not a teacher, what am I? A blogger...perhaps, a model. ( * _ * )

The Woman I Know

I know of a woman -
a woman so strong yet so gentle,
a triumphant warrior of life's immense battles,
an affectionate mother to us - 7 in all.

I know of a queen -
a queen so tough yet fragile,
a conquering heroine of assets worthwhile,
a mother whose nurturing touch never fails,

Papa Insoy and Mama Toria
I know of a woman -
a mother so dear,
I'm glad I came to know her,
I thank God she's my mother,

VICTORIA is her precious name,
God's greatest gift to all seven,
More than gold or gem so rare.

Introducing Clipix

There is another breakthrough happening in the web right now. It’s called clipix. This is a new site that allows you to clip your favorite links and organize it the way you want it. Aside from the suggested categories that Clipix has made ready for all its users, it also allows you to make your own that fit your interests. With all the articles, videos, photos, news items that you read each day, it is helpful to have Clipix wherein you can save all the links for future references.

Starting a Clipix account is just a piece of cake. All you need is to sign up through Facebook or Twitter Account and in no time, you have just created your very own web organizer. The next thing to do is to grab the Clipix button in your computer toolbar and start your clippings and enjoy.

Think of gift ideas for mom, possible venues for summer get-away, movies to look forward to, interesting articles you have read or have to read, recipes, You Tube videos, blog sites you need to visit – Clipix can organize it in such an easy manner so that you don’t have to browse the web should you need to visit them again.

Even clipping is hassle free. Let’s say, you have found an article which you could use in the future. All you need to do is click the Clipix button which you placed in the toolbar. Then, a pop up window will then appear conveniently at the upper right hand side of the page. The next thing to do is scroll down the categories and click the category where you want to save your clips. By doing so, you have moved the link to your own organizer and you can go back to it anytime of your convenience.

Although Clipix is an online web organizer, you still have an option to make everything public or choose to remain private. Aside from that, you can also create customized clipboards and you have the freedom to reorganize or rearrange them according to your own style.

My initial try of this site excites me and for sure I’ll be visiting this organizer often. Here's a look of my clipped interesting articles.

But still, I just don’t want you to take my words for it, experience it by yourself. Sign up with Clipix now.

My Own Circles of Friends

It's really good to have friends who share the same passion as yours such as sports, writing, photography and the likes. Generally, people who have common interests and likes clicked together and then being tied up in a deeper  bond of  friendship.Talking about friends, I have loads of them so I have to put them in different circles. I have movie buddies, eating buddies, singing buddies, dancing (disco) buddies, drinking buddies (ahem!) photography buddies and blogging buddies.

In this post, I would especially mention my blogging buddy in Phitsanulok whose passion for blogging is indeed very inspiring. With more or less ten blog sites under his name, he is gradually making a record in the Guinness Book of Records for the most number of blog sites by a single person. As a matter of fact, it is this friend who introduced blogging to me and inspired me to create this site.

Here are my travel buddies. That man holding a camera on the right side is Mr. John.
Just recently, my other blog site, TripZone and this site finally had their make-over courtesy of this friend. He might have lots of demands (such as KFC bucket meal and pizza and an exclusive post with links and badges on my site... :) ) before he finally did this make-over task, I'm glad I gave in because I like the way TripZone and Enzo's Point appear now. They simply look professional and cool.

The blogging buddy I'm talking about is Mr. John Patrick Benliro who is working as a part-time teacher  and a full-time blogger in Thailand (lol). "Many thanks to you, bro and hey, just reminding you about the header and the fb,tweeter and +1 buttons that you have yet to install here." ( :) grin)

Anyways, get to know more about this friend through these sites:

And oh, Patrick is not just my blogging buddy, he is also a singing, photography and a great drinking buddy too.

Big Eye Wear Deal

When I was an elementary pupil, I have always wanted to wear a pair of eyeglasses because I thought it's cool and it would create in me an image of being "genius". It was a childish wish that was unfortunately granted. My first pair of eyeglasses was to correct my astigmatism. At first I didn't mind being diagnosed of this refractive eye error. I was more than glad to wear eye glasses but little did I know that eye glasses can be very discomforting and yes, heavy in the pocket too. Prices depend on the quality and style of your chosen frames.  It follows that if you choose frames made by Gucci, RayBan, or Lacoste, you also have to pay more. But if you choose to pay less, you also expect a "not-so-good" quality. That's how I started to allocate from my salary an annual budget for my eye wear.

It's great to know that some optical shops offer promotions to benefit all those who share the same predicament as mine. What Zenni Optical is giving now is one of the biggest promotion ever launched. They are running a buy 2 pairs get one pair for free (equal or with a less value). This is one crazy promo that one should take advantage of. Not only that, along with these high quality yet affordable eyeglasses is a long list of freebies: Anti-Scratch Coating, Thin and Light 1.57 Index Single Vision Lens, Full UV Protection, Protective Case, and Micro-Fiber Cleaning Cloth.

Zenni Optical has cool and trendy styles of eyeglasses that fit everyone's lifestyle in any color that the client choose. Whether one is a student, a working mom, a daddy, he/she has a wide array of choices that he/she can avail in their $ 6.95 prescription eyeglasses. Anyone can order three pairs in different colors and styles to match what he/she wears or his/her moods of the day.

Yes, nothing beats a perfect 20/20 vision but for me and those many others who are left with no other choice but to wear one, these kinds of deals are significant and truly beneficial.
